  Ontayaki Ontayaki
Onta ware is a pottery made in the Oita Sarayama district (Sarayama, Geneicho), a mountain village in Hita City, Oita Prefecture. The kiln was opened in 1705 by a potter, Sanemon Yanase, who was invited from Koishiwara, Fukuoka Prefecture. When Mr. Muneyoshi Yanagi, the founder of the Mingei movement, visited Onta in 1931, he found value as a folk pottery in that the old-fashioned technique was inherited, and in 1954 it was worldwide. Onta ware became widely known, with high praise from the potter Bernard Leach. In 1995, it was certified as a national important intangible cultural property holding organization, and in 2008, it was selected as a national important cultural landscape under the name of "Onta ware village".Traditional techniques of Onta ware include "tobikanna", "brush eyes", "finger drawing", "comb drawing", "striking", and "sinking".Currently, there are nine kilns, and even after more than 300 years, the traditional technique is still being preserved with a single child.
